The Los Angeles City Council unanimously confirmed Martin L. Adams as General Manager and Chief Engineer of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP). He had already been nominated for this position by Mayor Eric Garcetti in June and has held an interim position since 23 July 2019. During this period of almost two months, the LADWP Board approved the Eland solar and battery storage project, which is considered the largest in the USA. In this context, Adams emphasizes that the LADWP aims to strengthen the Los Angeles renewable energy portfolio and is striving to lead the fight against climate change on both a local and a national level.
In his now officially confirmed position at the LADWP, Adams will lead over 10,000 employees. He has been with the Department for 35 years, most recently as Chief Operating Officer (COO). In this role, he has led extensive water and energy operations. Adams commented his appointment as General Manager & Chief Engineer in the current press release as follows: “We know where the future is leading us. We know we have to get to where we have no fossil fuels in our system and focus on our local water supply. We are working on those plans and making sure we are fully aligned in our Department, all pulling in the same direction. We’re going to get where we need to be and to do so in a very responsible way, with sensitivity to our customers who foot the bill. I know we have a lot of challenges ahead. We have a lot of things we do right at the Department and some things we have to correct. We have a great workforce and great capabilities. In the years ahead, I want to further hone that workforce and keep pointing us in the direction that the city needs to go.”
