NEC Energy Solutions states that it will be implementing 20MW of new municipal energy storage projects in total in New England. These are follow-up projects that were initiated two years ago by the Sterling Municipal Light Department, which installed a 2MW/3.9 MWh NEC GSS® Grid Storage Solution to better manage the regional power demand. The main purpose of the new systems is also to further reduce consumer electricity costs, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and make the electricity supply to communities safer. The energy storage systems will be equipped with NEC's energy storage control software platform and will therefore react flexibly to demand.
In this framework, NEC states that a new contract with the Taunton Municipal Lighting Plant would realize one of the largest projects in New England (3 MW/6 MWh). Several of the projects in New England are funded by the Advancing Commonwealth Energy Storage (ACES) program.
