Mitsubishi Heavy Industries to Invest in Green Hydrogen and Green Ammonia in South Australia

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) agreed to make a captial investment in the holding entity of the H2U Group – H2U Investments. This also includes the leading Australian developer of green hydrogen and green ammonia projects powered by renewable energy sources, The Hydrogen Utility (H2U), which is part of the H2U Group. Part of this investment are the company’s support for H2U’s projects - like a Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) study for H2U's Eyre Peninsula GatewayTM project in South Australia.

Eyre Peninsula GatewayTM in southwest South Australia, the first project of the initiatives, is expected to commence commercial production of green hydrogen and ammonia towards the end of 2022. The project will use green hydrogen produced by water electrolysis using power derived from renewable energy sources such as wind and solar to produce green ammonia and demonstrate hydrogen-powered gas turbine generators. MHI will participate in the project by contributing engineering resource to the FEED study phase and by providing key plant equipment.

The agreement joins other initatives in South Australia in helping decarbonize mineral processing and agricultural industries in the region, and lays the foundation to export locally produced green hydrogen and green ammonia to Japan and other destinations to help drive industrial decarbonization worldwide.
