Further Environmentally Friendly Development of the Aluminium Battery

Researchers at Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden, and the National Institute of Chemistry, Slovenia, have succeeded in developing a new concept for an aluminium battery that has twice the energy density of previous aluminium battery designs. This new development could possibly reduce production costs and the environmental impact. In addition, it could also be of great importance for both solar and wind energy.

In the new model of the aluminium battery, the anode and cathode are made of aluminium or an organic material based on anthraquinone, which makes it possible to store positive charge carriers from the electrolyte and to have a higher energy density in the battery.

In the old concept of the aluminium battery, graphite was used as the cathode. However, the energy content of graphite is too low to produce battery cells with sufficient enough power to use.
