Berkeley Lab Names Robert Kostecki as Director of the Energy Storage and Distributed Resource Division

Robert Kostecki, known for pioneering research in electrochemical systems engineering with a focus on performance fundamentals of electrochemical energy storage, among others, has been named Director of the Energy Storage and Distributed Resource (ESDR) Division of Berkeley Lab.

Berkeley Lab, founded in 1931, is a multi-program national laboratory, managed by the University of California for the Office of Sicence of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). To date, the scientists and researchers at Berkeley Lab have been recognized with a total of 13 Nobel Prizes. 

The ESDR Division conducts research and develops technologies that provide the electricity grid with significant storage capability for energy generated from renewable sources, monitoring and response technologies for the “smart grid,” and technologies for improved electricity distribution reliability.

Robert Kostecki has now been appointed the director of the ESDR Division, following his role as ESDR Division Deputy for more than four years and five years as the Division Deputy for Research for the Environmental Energy Technologies Division (EETD), the forerunner of ETA.

Kostecki holds a doctorate in chemistry from the University of Geneva, Switzerland. He is an internationally renowned scientist with extensive leadership experience. His research focus lies on performance fundamentals of electrochemical energy storage, conversion systems, as well as water treatment technologies. Furthermore, Kostecki is the vice president of the International Society of Electrochemistry and an active member of numerous scientific societies and committees.

“Robert’s formidable experience of over 24 years at Berkeley Lab provides him with the management skills, a strong technical foundation in conducting innovative research, and the ability to develop strong scientific visions, which position him well to lead the ESDR Division,” said Ravi Prasher, Berkeley Lab’s Associate Laboratory Director of Energy Technologies.
