German Battery Researchers Find New Clean Production Process for Electric Car Batteries

The Fraunhofer Institute for Material and Beam Technology IWS in Dresden, Germany, developed a new process to coat battery electrodes without using liquid chemicals. Instead, a dry film, which is claimed to be free of toxic solvents and more environmentally friendly, is applied on the electrodes.

The Fraunhofer Institute's goal is to make battery production ready for tomorrow's automotive industry. At present, the demand for battery cells in Germany is still primarily served by the Asian market in order to save costs. According to the institute, the newly developed production process has the potential to reduce power consumption for battery manufacturing to such an extent that production in Germany could also be profitable in the future.

The Finnish battery company BroadBit Batteries is already testing the invention under real conditions in the production of innovative sodium ion batteries.
